Tropical Cyclone Forecast – North Atlantic 2016

The UK Met Office has today issued its prediction for the likely numbers of Tropical Cyclones and Hurricanes to affect the North Atlantic during 2016.

They expect 14 tropical storms and 8 hurricanes to form, which is slightly up on the long term average (this forecast does not include Tropical Storm Alex, which occurred in January, outside of the forecast period – June to November).

El Nino (known to be quite instrumental in tropical storm forecasting) has shown considerable weakening since peaking last year as one of the strongest on record, which resulted in fewer tropical cyclones forming than normal.
